The United States sent in 2,000 military advisers to the non-communist South Vietnam. In 1963, that number grew to 16,300. While president Johnson sent more troops to the war, when Nixon became president he focused on bringing them home. He thought he would give South Vietnam the responsibility of frighting this war on their own. In January of 1963, agreements were reached and American troops were brought home. In April of 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam and the country was reunited. This was the longest war in American history. It cost the U.S. about 60 thousand lives and nearly 2 million Vietnamese deaths.
